Self-Care Q&A: Jeanette Castro

Entering a new decade really makes us think about what matters, and for us, that hasn’t changed since we first opened our virtual doors. What matters most to us is YOU! We’ve always been obsessed with concocting the best of the best natural skincare because skincare is a great way to incorporate putting yourself first daily...a.k.a practicing self-care!

While we can design products fit for any lifestyle or need, we know no one knows self-care more than, well, yourself! So, for all of 2020 we will be spotlighting green beauty enthusiasts, boss babes, Honey Belle team members, AND even our very own customers in a special Q&A series centered around all things self-care.

Follow along and get inspo for new ways to love on yourself or if you have some awesome tips and want to share, let us know here. Ready. Set. Self-care.

Meet Jeanette 💛

Meet Jeanette (@dudejeanette). Jeanette is Honey Belle's very own Chief Revenue Officer and oversees all things marketing and sales. She was born in the bay, raised in San Diego and has spent her whole life being creative. You can catch her hanging out with her hubby and pups, Coconut and Daisie. In her free-time she loves to be outdoors, play guitar, read comics, build action figures, play video games and indulge in conspiracy theories.

Can you walk us through a typical day for you?

A typical day in life while social distancing looks a little different than normal days but it usually looks like this...

7:30am - GET READY! I like to be an early riser (but quarantining has sometimes made it difficult to get up and get my day going).

8:00am - 4:00pm - HONEY BELLE! This looks like virtual meetings, phone calls, lots of planning and reviewing data.

5:00pm - 7:00pm - WORK OUT! I've been using the Nike Training Premium app which is currently FREE while we're being advised to stay home. After a quick core and glute workout, I'll hit the bag with my husband.

7:00pm - 9:00pm - RELAX! I set aside about 2 hours to cook, eat dinner, & relax. This is where I catch up on shows like 90 Day Fiancé or The Voice (lol).

9:00pm - 12:00am - FREELANCE! At the end of the night, I put on my freelancer hat and work on projects for clients.

Working out and my end of the day skincare routine are my favorite daily self-care rituals. I like to feel strong AND I like to have dewy skin.

What are your favorite ways to self-care?

My favorite ways to self-care are working out, masking, and doing anything creative from building something with my hands (DIY on Pinterest is a daily activity for me) or playing music. I also love to learn about and support different sustainable brands. My fave right now is womn!

What are some things that cause you stress? How do you manage?

Something that causes me stress is dealing with uncertainty. So the world's current status is definitely a major stressor for me right now. With work, if I have a meeting with a team member, I like to prepare at least the day before then go over my notes again right before the meeting. Even if I spend 5 minutes looking over the meeting agenda, I always feel so much better than if I go in blindly. I don't like to "waste" people's time by not coming prepared, especially when it takes very little effort to show up ready to go!

How I've been dealing with the current pandemic is meditating daily to remind myself of all the things I'm grateful for, letting go of trying to control things that I cannot control, and talking to my family all day every day (I'm one of 4 sisters so there's ALWAYS something to talk about lol). I guess how I manage the stress of uncertainty is really thinking about the things I can control. There is no such thing as "good stress," it's all the same effect on your body so I'm very mindful of when I'm allowing myself to feel it.

What advice related to self-care do you wish you received growing up?

Some advice I wish I received growing up is, "It's okay not to know what you're doing right now." Being Asian American (and really leaning into some stereotypes) it was always decided that I would be a nurse or a doctor but I knew that I wanted not that haha. Though my parents never pushed me too hard to be those things, I fell into what I thought were their expectations rather than really taking the time to explore and try new things. For a long time, I really didn't know what I was doing or what I wanted to do but once I granted myself the permission to just try, my life opened up and my health and well-being flourished.

Can you tell us more about skincare and self-care?

I LOVEEEEE skincare. I love trying new products or brands, researching upcoming trends, and skincare is literally me directly taking care of ME! My current routine starts with Glossier's Milky Oil, then Honey Belle's Lemongrass Foaming Facial Soap, I pat dry then dab on Glossier's Solution, tone with Flora Rosewater Toner, and moisturize with Krave Beauty's Oat So Simple. If I want to spend a little more time on skincare, I'll do a Coffee Scrub, Lip Scrub, and a mask (I like Ginger Lemon best) in between Milky Oil and the Facial Soap. For me, skincare is one of my favorite ways to self-care. Especially now, while staying at home, I can devote a little extra time to my day and night routines. My favorite Honey Belle product would have to be Flora Rosewater Toner. It smells AMAZING and has really helped my acne scars fade and skin glow!

That's all for now! Know someone whose self-care game is on point? Send us a message and we'll ask ALL the questions.

Hey Lorri!

Firstly, thank you for supporting Honey Belle :) I’m so happy to hear you’re loving it. Here’s a skincare regimen that incorporates a scrub and a mask.

1. Luxe
1a. Facial Scrub → I love Honey Belle’s Coffee Scrub (pat dry after and apply your mask to damp skin)
1b. DIY Detox Mask → I would recommend Coconut Rose or Matcha Mint for your specific skin concerns.
2. Flora
3. Elixir

Let us know which one you get and what you think!

P.S. Flora Rosewater Toner is back in stock here: https://honeybelleshop.com/collections/toners/products/flora

P.S.S. One amazing hack our Honey Comm(unity) does is use Flora as their liquid to mix their mask. Detox and toning all in one step!

Lorri Powell

Hi there,
I use the luxe cleansing oil, rosewater toner, and elixir face oil and they are AMAZING! I would like to try a mask, but I’m not sure where in the process I should use it? Also, which mask would be best for me, I have very oily skin with large pores (and some fine lines and wrinkles!!) I don’t wear much makeup, just some tinted moisturizer/mascara and concealer when needed.
Love your products,
Lorri

P.S. Any idea when you’ll have the rosewater toner back in stock?
