Really understanding your skin type (we’re talkin’ on a BFF level here) will help you correctly build a routine that results in a healthy, balanced complexion. The more you know about your skin type, the more you’ll be able to make informed choices about what textures and types of products are ideal for your skin.
Skin type is determined by: age, hormonal changes, genetics, pore size (which are also genetic), and climates and seasons.
TRY THIS: use a blotting sheet to figure out your skin type! Gently pat blotting paper all over your face and then hold it towards the light. If there is little to no oil, you most likely have dry skin. If there is oil from the T-Zone area (forehead, nose, chin), you most likely have normal or combination skin. If there is oil from all over the face, you most likely have oily skin.
Feels… smooth
Looks… balanced (not too dry or too oily), minimal visible pores, healthy blood circulation, few lines and wrinkles
Use… skincare essentials (cleanser, moisturizer, sunscreen)
Rarely reacts negatively to seasonal changes (i.e. weather) or new products
Feels… tight, rough
Looks… dull, no visible pores, red patches, more visible lines and wrinkles, produces less sebum than normal
Use… hydrating and rich, cream texture products
Easily irritated, inflamed, or itchy and can be flakey or cracked
Produces less sebum than normal
Feels… thick, supple
Looks… shiny, visible pores, less lines and wrinkles, prone to blackheads/pimples/other blemishes, produces more sebum than normal
Use… non-comedogenic and light, gel texture products
Still important to moisturize so you don’t dry out your skin, as this will cause your pores to produce even more oil to compensate
Feels… tight (cheeks, jaw area), slick (T-Zone area)
Looks… dry in some areas, shiny in other areas, visible pores
Use… spot treatments to help tackle different problem areas and balancing products
Myth busted! Sensitivity isn’t actually a skin type. We’re all affected by various internal and external factors (hormones, diet, product ingredients, the environment, sun exposure, etc.) – some skin is just more reactive than others. Always do a patch test when trying out new skincare, so you can figure out what your triggers are and avoid them!
Redness, itching, burning, dryness Negative reaction to fragrance
